• HIU/AAPV2 - A military history introduction to the Napoleonic wars in Europe – Tuesday 12.25 – 14.00 (B13)

This course aims to offer an introduction to the history of the Napoleonic wars in the perspective of military history. Focusing on the European theatres of war, it starts by giving background information and knowledge on the history of these conflicts, introducing the students to some of the main historiographical interpretations of these events. It then pays particular attention to the question of the experience of war, as well as bringing reflexions on the type of sources used to write the history of the Napoleonic wars, thus prompting the students to reflect on how historical knowedge is produced, and introducing them to source criticism by looking at memoirs and propaganda texts and getting them to work on how such sources can be used.

The Napoleonic wars were a central moment in the history of the advent of modern war. In this context a lot of literature has been produced on the question of the tactics used and the types of war violence enacted, with important debates questioning whether the Napoleonic wars were a total war. This seminar presents the results of those debates then goes further, questioning the impact of these armed conflicts on the broader cultural context of Napoleonic Europe.

• First Cities of Celtic Europe During the Late Iron Age (ARCH/QJHFC) – Wednesday 12.25 - 14.00 (B10)

This course examines the emergence of urbanization during the Late Iron Age in Celtic Europe, a period that marked a major transformation in Celtic societies. For a long time, the oppida, large fortified agglomerations, have long been considered the first cities of Celtic Europe. However, recent research has revealed the existence of another urban form, open agglomerations, which emerged in Celtic Europe from the 3rd century B.C., centuries before the development of oppida. What were these early urban centers like? How were they organized? What was their scale? Why are they essential to understanding the origins of urbanization? This course addresses these questions through the analysis of extensive survey data, including geophysical prospection and archaeological evidence.
