Network drives

This drive serves as your home directory, where you can store data needed for your studies or work.

UHK students have 70 MB of storage space available, while employees have 500 MB.

If the specified limit is exceeded, the system will not allow any additional files to be saved to the drive.

We do not recommend storing important files on the desktop.

You can store important documents on network drive P:. This reduces the risk of data loss caused by exceeding the network drive quota and corruption of profile files (when using roaming profiles), or the risk of losing files due to problems with your computer (when using local profiles).

This drive primarily serves as a source of study materials for UHK students, located in the UKAZKY directory. Only teachers are permitted to upload study materials to this directory. To create a folder, you must contact the relevant local Information Systems Department, preferably through the IT Helpdesk.

This drive is used for hosting your personal website. You can create static websites as well as dynamic pages using the PHP scripting language. Students have 25 MB of storage space available, while teachers have 50 MB. If the specified limit is exceeded, the system will not allow any additional files to be saved to drive W:. For more information, see the guide Personal Web Pages.

Files uploaded to your personal website directory are publicly accessible from the Internet. Under no circumstances should you store confidential data or files whose content violates applicable laws in this directory. Users bear full responsibility for the content of their personal website directories.

Remote Access to Network Drives

Remote access to your home directory, the study materials directory, and your personal website directory is available over the Internet via SFTP.

Other Data Storage Options

If you temporarily need more storage space, you can use the local drives of computers in classrooms, specifically the C:\temp directories.

Make sure to delete your data afterward, as other students can also access it. Local drives on classroom computers are not intended for permanent storage of student data, and their contents are regularly deleted.

How to Handle Your Data

P:\ (formerly G:) – Store all your important data directly on drive P:. This ensures that your data is regularly backed up, minimizing the risk of data loss. Once you have used all the available storage space (which you will recognize when the system no longer allows you to save additional files), we strongly recommend backing up and deleting old data to free up space for further work.

We also recommend exploring and using cloud services. For more information, see the OneDrive and ownCloud services.

Desktop – Store only shortcuts (links) on your desktop. Do not save any work or documents there. In the event of an improper logout or computer restart, you could lose this data.

Files stored on the desktop also significantly increase login and logout times.

*C:* – We do not recommend storing any important data on drive C:. Data on this drive is not automatically backed up, and in the event of a local disk failure, it will be permanently lost. Users are fully responsible for data stored in this location and must therefore perform their own backups.

C:\temp – The Temp directory on classroom computers serves as a temporary workspace for projects and is also shared with other users to facilitate collaboration among student teams. After each class, back up your project to drive P:. Any local user has the right to delete data in the Temp directory at any time. For the same reason, this directory is not suitable for storing any data that should not be accessible to other users of the UHK network. The Temp directory is regularly cleaned automatically.

Edu – Teachers and students of the Faculty of Informatics and Management (FIM) at UHK have 100 MB of storage space available in their home directory on the EDU server. This directory is created automatically when they first access the server from the university computer network (see the information at http://edu.uhk.cz/). This data is backed up daily during the night.

Backups – Most employees currently have a CD/DVD-RW burner installed in their PCs. If you do not have this option for backing up your data, you can contact the staff of the relevant IT department at any time to request a backup. Students can have their data burned to a disc at the Service Centre or use, for example, a USB flash drive. Non-standard devices (MP3 players, digital cameras, etc.) are not supported.
