OneDrive
OneDrive is a cloud-based file storage service provided by Microsoft. It allows users to store, synchronise, and transfer files between multiple devices from anywhere in the world, much like Dropbox. The service is completely free of charge for UHK students and employees.
Uploaded data must not contain pirated software or any other content that violates applicable laws of the Czech Republic. We do not recommend storing sensitive personal data or confidential internal organisational documents on cloud storage services without encryption.
As OneDrive is an external cloud service, the UHK IT Department (OIT) cannot guarantee its availability.
All OneDrive backups are the responsibility of the service provider (Microsoft). We recommend that users regularly back up their data to their own external storage devices.
Advantages:
-
Students can use 25 GB of storage space.
-
Official mobile applications are available for Android and iOS.
-
File sharing capabilities.
-
The client is included in Office 365 (2013) or Windows 8.x and later versions.
Disadvantages:
-
Limitations on the number of files (20,000), maximum file size (2 GB per file), and the number of files that can be synchronised within a library (5,000 files).
Installing and Using the OneDrive Desktop Client (Administrator Rights Required)
Installation and use of the OneDrive desktop client are permitted only on personal and staff computers. The client is not and will not be installed on computers shared by multiple users.
Installation
-
Download the OneDrive for Business client from the Microsoft website: onedrive.live.com/about/en-us/download/.
-
Follow the installation wizard to complete the installation.
Configuration
-
Launch the OneDrive application.
-
In the "Which library do you want to sync?" window, enter the required information and start synchronisation.
-
To obtain the library URL, open the university email website (see Signing in to Office 365), click the square app launcher icon in the upper-left corner, and select OneDrive.
-
Once OneDrive has loaded, copy the URL from the browser's address bar and paste it into the OneDrive client. The URL should look approximately like this: https://unihk-my.sharepoint.com/personal/username_uhk_cz/Documents/Forms/All.aspx.
-
You can also change the location where the folder containing your documents will be stored.
-
-
OneDrive will now prompt you to sign in. Enter your username in the format username@uhk.cz and your password.
-
OneDrive should begin synchronising your files.
-
A new item called "OneDrive for Business" will appear under Favourites on your computer, providing access to the folder containing your documents.
Connecting OneDrive as a Network Drive
OneDrive can be mapped as a network drive, allowing it to appear and function in the same way as a shared network drive.
Microsoft does not officially recommend using OneDrive as a mapped network drive.
