History

The University of Hradec Králové (in Czech Univerzita Hradec Králové, in Latin Universitas Reginaegradecensis) is a public university with a quite interesting history.

The first mention of teachers' training in our region dates back to 1775. Then it took some time to form an official institution. It happened in 1959 when the Institute of Education in Hradec Králové was established and could produce new teachers for elementary-level students who were till then educated in high schools. It did not take long and the Faculty of Education in Hradec Králové was born in 1964.

Training for all education levels was enabled after higher education reform in Czechoslovakia in 1976.

The Velvet Revolution took its place in 1989 and some of the former staff from 1968 came back to the faculty. Ever since the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, it opened up new possibilities and international cooperation has been born.

In 1992 the Pedagogical University of Hradec Králové was officially established!

On February 15, 1993, the university started expanding and a new faculty was added to the unit. It was the Faculty of Management and Information Technologies, which was renamed the Faculty of Informatics and Management in 2000. The same year when the University of Hradec Králové was set as the official name.

On September 1, 2005, the Faculty of Arts, later known as the Philosophical Faculty, was commenced as the third faculty of the university.

Five years later, on September 1, 2010, after the transformation of the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Science was formed.

Hradec Králové experienced many reconstructions and the university was part of them

First, the modern building called the Common Education Facility (Objekt společné výuky) was awarded by Czech architects as "The Building of the Year" in 1998.

Second, the long-expected and high-technology building of the Faculty of Informatics and Management (FIM), which required an investment of 360 million CZK, was finished in 2008. It is situated next to the Common Education Facility.

Third, the Faculty of Science (PřF) was built in 2016. The construction took only 21 months in total and the final cost was approx. 450 million CZK. Located next to the FIM.

All three buildings are located in one spot that is in general called “Na Soutoku Campus”.

These days UHK is not falling behind. In 2022 a major reconstruction of the Philosophical Faculty building (FF), enabled the students to study in a modern environment that is also respectful to the history of the building. Another extensive reconstruction is just behind the corner. The reconstruction of the Faculty of Education (PdF) building should start in the following years.

Now, we are here, in the present day. What did the future prepare for us?
