Doctoral studies involve not only research itself, but also a range of practical and organisational matters. At UHK, you can therefore make use of several forms of support designed to make your studies easier. The University Library can assist you with academic resources, publishing activities and the preparation of your dissertation, while the Doctoral Programme Board oversees the progress of your studies and the fulfilment of your study requirements.
It is also important to be familiar with the social and legal aspects associated with doctoral studies, such as health and social insurance, employment, or parenthood. In the following sections, you will find basic information as well as an overview of whom you can contact in different situations.
PhD Summit
The annual introductory course for new doctoral students, available to both full-time and part-time students, provides a practical foundation for successfully starting doctoral studies at UHK. Participants become familiar with proven approaches and have the opportunity to meet representatives of the University’s management as well as colleagues from across different fields. The programme covers topics such as project management, grant schemes, academic databases, Open Science, self-presentation, and science communication. For up-to-date information about the summit, please contact its coordinator, Ing. Martina Janečková.
Informal Gatherings
Throughout the academic year, the UHK Doctoral School organises informal events that encourage networking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the sharing of experiences among doctoral students. These events are conducted in a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere and are open to all PhD students. Recent events have included PhD Coffee Break, PhD Laser Game, Coffee with the Vice-Rector, PhD Brunch, and Tools that Move Us Forward.
PhD Open Office
The PhD Open Office serves as a space for individual consultations, discussion of ideas, and assistance with practical matters related to doctoral studies. Students may contact the Doctoral School coordinator regarding issues such as organisation of studies, research planning, international mobility, and funding opportunities. Consultations take place in person every other Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Training Courses
The UHK Doctoral School organises a broad range of soft-skills and professional development courses for doctoral students across all disciplines. Typical course topics include effective time management, artificial intelligence in research, project management, Open Science, knowledge transfer, and research ethics. Courses are led by both university experts and external professionals and are specifically tailored to the needs of doctoral students.
The Czech Association of Doctoral Researchers
Join an association bringing together doctoral students from across the Czech Republic. The association aims to improve the quality and conditions of doctoral studies in the Czech Republic, create opportunities for students to share experiences across disciplines and within individual fields, raise awareness of study and career opportunities, and help doctoral students further develop their professional skills.
