Responsible behavior at UHK

In many ways, the current time also limits one's comfort. That is why the University of Hradec Králové, taking into account the current situation not only in the energy market, has adopted several cost-saving measures, which are intended to contribute to the continued functioning of the university as we know and love it. We created this manual to guide us on what we can do together for a more sustainable UHK. Let's look around and behave consciously, gently, and sustainably. We will help our surroundings, our university, and the environment. We turn to you as partners and companions – help us to be frugal and relieve UHK in difficult times.

WHAT DOES UHK DO

WHAT YOU CAN DO

We are gradually replacing fluorescent lights in all buildings. On September 30, 2022, we shut down the fountain on Václav Havel Square for savings reasons.

Every watt counts!

If every employee or student makes 2 cups of tea with one liter of hot water, UHK will needlessly pay a total of 300,000 crowns for electricity consumption per year. Ask a colleague or roommate to make tea together, or heat only the water you need. Also, take care of the equipment in offices and dormitories, descale kettles and defrost refrigerators, thus significantly reducing the energy consumption of electric devices.

More than 500 desktop PCs are currently actively used at UHK. Their operation for the entire working time costs up to 1.3 million crowns annually. Therefore, do not leave your PC on outside of working hours or when you are not in the dormitories.

We heat all buildings to 20°C during the day and overnight to 18°C. Saving mode always lasts from 5:00 p.m. to 07:00 a.m.

Look around!

Turn off the lights when you leave the classrooms, toilets, and dormitories. If you discover a defect in electrical appliances, or if you think that the equipment is obsolete, inform your supervisor or the dormitory administration, they will inspect the situation.
Is it essential to have all the lights on in the office or apartment in the dorms? Consider leaving only some of the lights on to illuminate your space.
When using the toilet, think twice about whether it is necessary to flush with a larger amount of water. It is possible to use a smaller flush button.

Schedules will be more "condensed" in the buildings, or classes will concentrate in one building in the case of distance learners.

Don't forget about healthy movement!

During long-term desk-bound work or studying for an exam, the perceived temperature can drop significantly, affecting comfort at work. Therefore, remember to do a regular workout, an occasional walk, or a short exercise.

We have installed bins for sorted waste in all UHK buildings, and now such bins are also available in the dormitories.

Sustainably at the dorms!

In the dormitories, you pay not only rent but also energy costs. However, energy consumption is still increasing compared to last year, which is not sustainable in the long term at current energy prices. If the residents behave responsibly in the dormitories, the increased energy prices may project less drastically. So it still applies –> turn off lights, save water and turn on the heat only when you are at the dorms.
As you may have noticed, the dormitories are newly equipped with waste sorting bins. By using them, you not only help the environment but because the management of sorted waste is five times cheaper than mixed waste, you save significantly on the dormitories expenditure. All of this can again positively affect the rent.

Thank you for mitigating the crisis that our society is currently facing. Your UHK.
