UNICIA: UNIversities towards CIvic Awareness

The University of Hradec Králové has joined an international consortium of universities implementing the project UNIversities towards CIvic Awareness (UNICIA).

This consortium of three European and three African Universities has created a set of workshops and courses dedicated to boosting civic and social engagement among Generation Z.

Our mission is to leverage unique learning styles and social behaviors to foster active citizenship and community involvement. Through specialized educational programs, we aim to equip young and future employees with the critical skills needed for robust participation in civic life. UNICIA plans to create a comprehensive activity program consisting of 6 interactive open online courses and 5 workshops (including facilitated discussions).

Objectives

  • promoting civic attitudes and common values,
  • raising awareness about equality and taking inclusive actions,
  • raising awareness about digital transformation and its consequences,
  • answering to the education expectations of Generation Z,
  • improve the level of employability of young workers from Europe and Africa,
  • creating an offer for people in a difficult social and economic situation.

In today’s digital age, understanding how information is created, shared, and manipulated is essential for active citizenship. This workshop introduces key concepts of media and digital literacy within a democratic context.

What you will learn:

  • the difference between misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation,
  • how algorithms on platforms like Facebook and TikTok shape opinions,
  • how global and local events — from the war in Ukraine to movements like #EndSARS in Nigeria — illustrate the power of information ecosystems,
