Young Scientists Conference stirred still academic waters

Author: Matyáš Strnad

Young Scientists Conference | “Igráček UHK” concluded the student grant competition for doctoral students at the University of Hradec Králové (“Igráček UHK”), which main aims were to support basic research of PhD students in the early stage of their scientific career and to increase their skills required for their future professional career in research.

PhD students across the university’s faculties introduced their project results and exchanged experiences at Young Scientists Conference

The conference happened on May 17, 2023, at the Faculty of Science UHK; the S1 aula offered a dignified yet familiar environment for our students to share the knowledge they gained over the last year of their flourishing academic careers. Vice-Rector for Science and Creative Activities, Ondřej Krejcar, gave the opening speech, encouraging our students to continue their scientific endeavors and promising continuous support from the UHK throughout their paths. The Internal grant agency manager, Lenka Karalová, welcomed the conference’s participants, thanked all investigators and mentors for their cooperation, and wished for their future success.

The presented projects were:

  • Research of small molecules for scavenging of organophosphorus compounds (investigators: Mgr. Eliška Prchalová, Mgr. Zuzana Kohoutová, Mgr. Karolína Knittelová, Mgr. Markéta Miškeříková)
  • In vitro study of 17β-HSD10 activity (investigators: Mgr. Michaela Vašková, Mgr. Annamária Halečková, Mgr. Marie Hamšíková, Mgr. Aneta Rotterová, Mgr. Katarína Jurková)
  • Regional security implications of the Sino-US strategic competition in Latin America and the Horn of Africa (investigators: Nikola Jokanović, M.A., Asnake Anteneh Chanie, M.A., Elvin Francisco Rodríguez Fabilena)
  • Islamic insurgency in Northern Mozambique: Its causes, consequences and possible solutions (investigators: Mgr. Tadeáš Vala, Mgr. et Mgr. Jakub Zbýtovský)
  • Detection and identification of potential human pathogens in ectoparasitic arthropods with a focus on Borrelia miyamotoi (investigators: Mgr. Lenka Michalčíková, Ing. Karolína Bjelková)
  • Investigation of limits of unobtrusive sensors developed at the Faculty of Science for vital functions monitoring (investigators: Mgr. Damián Bušovský, Mgr. et Bc. Kateřina Voglová)
  • UHK Decision Support System (investigators: Ing. Sudha Prathyusha Jakkaladiki MSc., Ing. Jan Krunčík, Ing. Martina Janečková)

Apart from the scientific papers in which the investigators presented their discoveries, most of which are currently in respected journal reviews, the students say the primary outcome of their participation in the project was the experience gained from working in teams and from the internships and summer schools abroad they were able to attend.

The project fulfilled its goals. We managed to motivate young researchers to be more active in collaborating with their peers, it created a window of opportunities to develop their skills, and I’m happy to say they all gained some new friends. This networking part of science is sometimes neglected, but having a web of friendly contacts in research is, in nowadays scientific environment, a crucial advantage, concludes Vice-Rector Krejcar.
