Sustainability at the UHK: Everyday steps that make sense
The University of Hradec Králové is actively committed to a responsible approach to the climate, natural resources and interpersonal relationships. We strive to reduce the University's ecological footprint while creating an environment where sustainability is not just a strategy, but a normal part of everyday life. Be inspired by simple principles that each of us can easily incorporate into our day – at work, at home and when travelling.
Energy and heat
- Turn off lights when you leave the room, and turn off computers and printers that you are not using.
- Use the energy-saving modes of appliances and think about their energy class.
- In winter, prefer short and intensive ventilation.
- Closed windows and doors help save heat – especially during the heating season.
- In unoccupied areas, consider reducing or turning off the heating or maintaining it at a moderate temperature.
- When preheating rooms, set the temperature 1-2 °C lower – heat gains from technology and people will quickly heat the room.
Water
- Don't waste water – pour only the amount of water you need into the electric kettle.
- If possible, wash dishes in a sink filled with water or in a dishwasher, not under running water.
- Avoid bottled water and opt for tap water or soda bars instead, ideally using your bottle.
Waste and consumption
- Sort your waste correctly and consistently – you can find colour-coded waste containers and "how-to" guides at the University.
- Reduce disposable packaging, cutlery, cups – use programmes like REbox and REcup.
- Buy only what you need; prioritise quality over quantity.
- Try to repair and reuse things – what you don't need can be used by others.
- Reduce paper consumption by printing double-sided; prioritize electronic documents.
Transport
- Prioritise sustainable transport: public transport, train, bike, or walk.
- Use carpooling or shared transport means such as bikes and scooters.
- Limit car trips alone. Take a plane when necessary only.
Meals and catering
- Don't waste food. Don't be afraid to ask for a smaller portion or to take food away in a box.
- Carry your bottle and reusable containers.
- Encourage healthier and more considerate choices – for nature and your own body.
Responsible behaviour and environmental culture
- Think about the impact of your behaviour – on people, nature, and public spaces.
- Be respectful and promote an open, tolerant, and safe environment.
- Take an active stand against bullying, discrimination, and violations of the rights of others.
- Be an inspiration to those around you. Get involved in volunteering, student initiatives, or community projects.
Digital responsibility
- Follow cybersecurity rules – use strong passwords, keep your software and antivirus up to date.
- Do not respond to suspicious emails or enter passwords on unverified sites.
Each of us can be a game changer. Sustainability is not just about rules but about attitudes and a willingness to look for better ways. Join us – together we are changing the University and the world around us for the better.
