AI4UNI: Strengthening AI Competences in Higher Education
The AI4UNI project aims to support universities in adapting to the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) by strengthening digital competences, promoting responsible AI use, and fostering international cooperation.
As part of the project, a staff training programme was organised, combining online modules in March 2026 and an on‑site training sessions held at the University of Hradec Králové in May 2026. The training brought together over 50 participants - academic and administrative staff from partner institutions, creating a platform for knowledge exchange and discussion on the role of AI in higher education.
Focus of the Training
The programme addressed both practical and strategic aspects of AI use in HE. Participants explored how AI tools can support:
- teaching and learning processes,
- research activities,
- administrative workflows, and
- communication.
In addition to hands‑on exploration of AI tools, the training placed strong emphasis on critical thinking and responsible use of AI, including ethical considerations, data protection, and the reliability of AI-generated outputs.
Key Topics and Discussions
Throughout the training, participants engaged in discussions on:
- the benefits of AI, such as time efficiency, automation of routine tasks, and support for data analysis and content creation,
- the limitations and risks, including accuracy issues, data security, and ethical concerns,
- the impact of AI on workload and working practices, and
- the need for clear institutional guidelines and training for staff and students.
Particular attention was given to the importance of prompt design, critical evaluation of outputs, and transparency in AI use, as well as to emerging topics such as chatbot implementation and AI‑supported communication.
International Collaboration and Exchange
A key strength of the AI4UNI training was its international dimension. Participants from different countries and institutions shared their experiences, challenges, and good practices, highlighting that many universities face similar questions regarding AI integration.
This exchange contributed to a deeper understanding of how AI can be implemented in diverse institutional contexts while respecting local needs and regulatory frameworks.
Outcomes and Impact
The AI4UNI staff training provided participants with:
- practical knowledge of AI tools and their applications,
- increased awareness of ethical and legal aspects of AI,
- inspiration for integrating AI into their daily work, and
- opportunities for future collaboration across institutions.
Overall, the training confirmed that AI should not be seen as a replacement for human expertise, but rather as a supportive tool that can enhance efficiency and innovation when used responsibly.
