Author: Chyuu Myet Chyei

Winter can be harsh and challenging for some students who have just entered this new winter landscape for the first time. Here are the places you can have fun to beat those winter blues, regardless of doing sports, relaxation, socialization, etc.

Aquacentrum

Do you know that you can enjoy the indoor wave pool, water slide, jacuzzi, and beer all in one place? In Aquacentrum, you can do all that. Attached to it is a 50 m pool and a sauna. This place offers a rechargeable watch with a chip and offers discounted entry with an ISIC. Additionally, you can check out their website for women-only hours.

Bowling Alley

Asport

If you want to grab good food and go bowling, A Sport is a great place to hang out with your friends. It is located just behind Futurum, which means walking distance from Palachova Dormitory. Be careful, this place is usually packed, so it's advisable to make a reservation in advance.

Bonstep Dance School

Do you want to do something other than the gym? Bonstep is a place for you. Here you can join their Zumba sessions or attend their Latin American classes. It is within walking distance of the main train station, and they offer tickets for all types of entry.

Christmas Markets

markets

Do not book your travel tickets just yet. Check out the dates for Christmas markets in the Czech Republic first! They are one of the best in Europe. Usually, they start in the last week of November and last until Christmas Day. Hradec’s Christmas market is situated big old town square. You can buy souvenirs, snacks, mulled wine, and enjoy the ice-skating rink with your friends.

Hockey Games

Support your local hockey team, Mountfield, or our university hockey team, United HK. Whichever you choose, you will have fun. The atmosphere is great! Hockey games take place at Zimní Stadion, and it is right behind the UHK campus. Enjoy the local beer, and learn how to cheer for your team in Czech. It’ll be a memorable experience.

City’s Museums

Museum

Don’t forget to learn more about Hradec Králové at the East Bohemian Museum. There is more to see in the Gallery of Modern Art and the White Tower. Do not forget to use your student card for discounts. Also, it’s the best place to learn about the history of the city that celebrates 800 years since its first written mention.

Theatre and Music

Klicpera

If you would like to taste a theatre art in Hradec, you must visit the Klicperovo Divadlo, Divadlo Drak, or  Studio Beseda. If you are more into music, the perfect place is the Hradec Philharmonic or City Music Hall, which offer a variety of musical performances. The city is well-known for the piano’s production. The most famous brand is Petrof.

BioCentral

In addition to CineStar in Futurum, there is another cinema near the Central bus stop. They offer movies in both English audio and subtitles. This place also has a bar and a coffee shop where you can hang out with friends after your movie.

Nearby cities

Here are a few great cities you can do a day trip to:

Pardubice is known as the city of gingerbread. Other than visiting their famous castle, old town, and Sephora, grab a coffee in Café Bajer. You’ll love the vibe there.

Malá Skála, just a two-hour train ride away from Hradec, is a quaint city full of fantastic hiking trails. Do a short hike from the train station to Vranov Castle, all the way to Frýdštejn Castle, and grab a beer there. From there, find your way back to the train station. You’ll fall in love with this hike.

Litomyšl is a small city in the Pardubice region. It is known for its UNESCO World Heritage Site, Litomyšl castle complex. The town in general is very beautiful. It is definitely worth checking out.
