A cross-sectional study of mental health among university students in the Czech Republic – Questionnaire
Starting Monday, October 27, 2025, the second wave of data collection for a study focused on monitoring the mental health of university students in the Czech Republic will begin.
The pilot study, conducted in autumn 2023 under the professional supervision of the National Institute of Mental Health, produced results that cannot be ignored. The research revealed that:
- more than 65% of students report low well-being,
- 45% of students show signs of moderate to severe anxiety,
- more than half of students exhibit symptoms of moderate to severe depression,
- significant risk of suicidal behavior was identified in nearly half of the respondents.
These findings confirm a trend also observed internationally – the mental health of young people has been deteriorating over the long term, with the Covid-19 pandemic further amplifying the issue. Since most mental disorders emerge before the age of 24, the university environment plays a key role in early identification of problems and providing support.
Therefore, in 2024, the University of Hradec Králové established a virtual support space called Help Zone. This specialized section of the UHK website focuses on key topics such as acute crises, specific needs, mental and physical health, safety, and study-related difficulties. Another now indispensable part of the psychosocial and ethical infrastructure at UHK is the ombudsperson position, currently held by Veronika Střítecká.
Data collection will take place from October 27, 2025, to November 16, 2025.
