PhD students gained skills to navigate turbulent academic waters

Place: Říčky v Orlických horách, Author: Matyáš Strnad

Our first-year PhD students are coming back from Říčky v Orlických horách where they learned from experienced academic staff about the various possibilities and also challenges that they can come across during their studies.

This was the second year of the unique course aimed at PhD students at UHK. The language of the summit is English and it is structured for full-time as well as combined students from all university units.

"The students learned about projects and grants, they went through ethics course in the academic environment, I think they highly appreciated the advice on publication and journals, which is a thing that they sometimes struggle with. I'm glad we were able to create this opportunity to properly kick off their academic careers and I'm looking forward to our scientific cooperation in the future!" says UHK Rector, prof. Kamil Kuča.

Other activities included information on science promotion, networking, technology transfer and a valuable workshop on academic career planning and evaluation of science in the Czech Republic and worldwide.

"It was a wonderful summit that opened my eyes to managing a complex PhD study journey. I am also very much excited about the availability of the university's higher officials (the Rector and Vice-rector) throughout the program and sharing very critical points for us. This is very uncommon in my home university and I learnt a lot to do in the future,"  comments one of the participants, Teshome Mengesha Marra.

The list of lecturers and their short bios are available in the summit's schedule.
