On 12 May 2026, the outdoor area of the Study and Research Library in Hradec Králové hosted the Language MeetUp, a lively international event co-organised by the University of Hradec Králové, Eurocentrum Hradec Králové, and the Study and Research Library in Hradec Králové.

The event was designed in a “Speak-Dating” format, offering visitors a unique opportunity to engage in short, informal conversations with native speakers that currently study at the University of Hradec Králové. Throughout the day, participants could explore a wide range of languages and cultures in a dynamic and interactive environment. Visitors could experience not only well known European languages such as English, Italian, French or Spanish, but also Burmese, Chinese (TW), IsuZulu or Ukrainian.

Connecting Languages, Cultures, and People

The programme was divided into two parts: a morning session for secondary school students and an afternoon session open to the general public. Both segments attracted strong interest and created a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.

Visitors had the chance to learn basic phrases, and discuss everyday topics such as travel, culture, traditions, and lifestyle. The informal setting encouraged participants to overcome language barriers, ask questions, and gain confidence in communication.

Interactive and Engaging Format

Each language was represented at its own table, where speakers introduced not only their language but also their culture and country. Students brought their own ideas, materials, or cultural items.

This interactive approach proved highly effective, especially for younger visitors, who could experience foreign languages in a natural and engaging way beyond the traditional classroom environment.

Internationalisation in Practice

The Language MeetUp highlighted the importance of internationalisation at home, creating opportunities for intercultural exchange directly within the local community. It also showcased the active involvement of international students at UHK, who contributed significantly to the success of the event.

The collaboration between the university and regional partners further strengthened the connection between academia and the wider public, demonstrating how international cooperation can be translated into accessible and meaningful activities.
