UHK International Students Bring the World to Elementary Classrooms in Hradec Králové
University of Hradec Králové students once again stepped beyond the university campus and into local elementary school classrooms this winter semester. Throughout late November and December, international students visited three primary schools in Hradec Králové to share their cultures, traditions, and personal stories with young learners. It was the second edition of our initiative “To the world with UHK.”
Partner Schools Across the City
The visits took place at ZŠ Mandysova, ZŠ M. Horákové, and Základní škola Sever.
In cooperation with dedicated teachers and school coordinators, UHK students prepared interactive presentations tailored to different age groups. The sessions were designed to introduce countries and customs while also encouraging curiosity, open-mindedness, and intercultural dialogue.
A Journey Across Continents
Over the course of several weeks, pupils had the opportunity to “travel” across the globe without leaving their classrooms. International students represented a wide range of countries: Argentina, Ghana, Brazil, Nigeria, Taiwan, and Spain.

Through photos, music, short language lessons, quizzes, and personal anecdotes, the university students introduced children to traditional food, national holidays, school systems, geography, and everyday life in their home countries. Many sessions included interactive elements such as learning simple greetings, discovering fun cultural facts, or comparing Czech traditions with those abroad.
Learning Beyond Textbooks
The initiative forms part of UHK’s broader effort to connect international students with the local community. For elementary school pupils, the visits provide a unique opportunity to meet people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds in person. For UHK students, it is a valuable experience in public speaking, intercultural communication, and community engagement.
Teachers from the participating schools highlighted how meaningful it is for children to interact directly with young people from around the world. These encounters help break down stereotypes and make global topics tangible and relatable.
Strengthening Internationalisation at Home
Activities such as these reflect the ongoing commitment of the University of Hradec Králové to promoting “internationalisation at home.” By bringing international perspectives directly into local classrooms, UHK helps build an open, globally aware community in Hradec Králové.
We would like to thank all participating schools, teachers, and especially our international students for their enthusiasm and willingness to share their cultures. Their openness and energy continue to inspire younger generations and strengthen the bridge between the university and the city.
