Bachelor study

Study requirements: 1st year of study

Study requirements for the first year of study include completion of the required courses and obtaining a sufficient number of credits for their completion. When registering for courses, keep in mind that you have to gain a total of 180 credits during 3 years of study. These must be divided between compulsory courses, compulsory-optional courses, compulsory-optional linguistic courses, and optional courses.

The study results are checked twice in the first year of study. To continue studying, at least 10 credits need to be acquired by the last day of the winter semester examination period, otherwise the study is terminated by that date (see Part 3, Article 16, s. 2 of the Study and Examination Regulations). Number of credits obtained at the end of the summer semester of the first year since the beginning of study must be at least 40.

Keep in mind that some courses last longer than one semester. To be able to enrol, for example, Czechoslovak Political History after 1945 (CSPD2), you must first complete Czechoslovak Political History 1918-1945 (CSPD1).

Compulsory courses for the first year of study include Introduction Seminar to Political Science, Introduction to International Relations, Ancient and Medieval Political Thought, or History of Europe after 1918. The complete list of courses can be found here.

Study requirements: 2nd year of study

In the second year, together with completing the courses you are obliged to choose the topic of the bachelor thesis and find a suitable supervisor to guide you. During the summer semester you have to enter the topic of your bachelor thesis into the STAG system. Here's how to do it:

Choosing a topic: Choose your topic according to your own preferences, but always consult with your supervisor. Exceptionally, it is possible to choose one of the topics currently offered by academics. The offer is very limited, and for KP we prefer the first variant of the topic selection. The list of academics and the offer of topics can be found here: a list of academics and their professional interests, including suggested topics of final theses.

Choosing a supervisor: At the beginning of the summer semester, contact an academic who could supervise your bachelor thesis. A bachelor thesis supervisor can be any academic with the Ph.D., or an external researcher - in that case, the approval of the head of the department is required (Mgr. Milan Hrubeš, Ph.D.).

Topic of bachelor thesis: After you have agreed with the supervisor on the essentials of your bachelor thesis assignment, in STAG, in the section My study, fill in the data in the Qualification thesis ribbon. The necessary data are: academic year, topic, English title, bachelor thesis supervisor, principles for elaboration (i.e. annotation, what is the focus of the thesis, what is the goal, how you will proceed, what methods you will use, etc., in the range of approx. 10 –20 lines), and the list of recommended literature using the KP citation style. The KP citation style can be found at the bottom of this page in the documents for download.

The topic of the thesis must be submitted in STAG by 31st May.

Study requirements: 3rd year of study

In the 2nd year of your study you chose the topic of the bachelor thesis and you entered it into the STAG system. The assignment for the 3rd year is therefore, in addition to the completion of the remaining courses, the elaboration of the bachelor thesis and the signing up for the state final examination (SFE). Consultation of your work on the bachelor thesis and its submission are the necessary conditions for the fulfilment of courses Bachelor Thesis 1 (winter semester) and Bachelor Thesis 2 (summer semester). At the beginning of the winter semester, consult the exact conditions for obtaining the credits for these courses with your supervisor. Below you can find out how the thesis should look like, what you need to be careful about, when you have to submit it, and how to apply for the SFE:

Formal requirements of the thesis: Essentials of the thesis are governed by decree of the Dean of FF UHK No. 17/2018 (font, line spacing, and other formal requirements). The required number of pages of the thesis is in the range of 40 to 60 (12 Times New Roman font size, 1.5 lines spacing and 30-35 mm margin width). Only the text of the thesis from the introduction to the conclusion, including the notes and the bibliography, is included in the required range. To refer to resources, follow the KP citation style.

Submission of the thesis: Upload the finished thesis to the eVŠKP system. Before uploading, enter the assignment data of the thesis generated from this system. Then print the work in 2 copies and submit it to the KP secretariat or send it by mail. Instructions on the form of the front cover of the thesis are given in the decree of the Dean of the FF UHK No. 17/2018.

Binding deadlines for uploading the thesis to the eVŠKP system and submitting to the KP secretariat (always by 12:00 on the given day):

Graduation: State Final Examination (SFE)

The successful completion of the state final examination (SFE) is essential for graduation. SFE consists of: the defence of the final bachelor thesis, and exams in Political Systems, Political Thinking and International Relations. For each of these subjects there is a list of specific questions for the State Final Examination, see: Political Systems (Set n. 1, Set n. 2),Political Thinking andInternational Relations.

Bachelor thesis defence takes 20 minutes. The supervisor of the thesis and its opponent first present their assessments, then the student has the opportunity to comment on them and answer the questions raised in the assessments, after that a discussion follows.

The course of the final state examination is as follows: the student draws questions for all subjects. He/she then has 40 minutes to prepare; the examination itself also takes 40 minutes. The questions are 4: 2 from Political Systems (one from comparative political science / theory + one focused on the political system of the Czech Republic, 20 minutes in total), 1 from Political Thinking (10 minutes) and 1 from International Relations (10 minutes). During the exam, the student answers the selected questions and additional questions of the examiners.
