Program Description
The aim of the study programme is to educate highly qualified professionals through independent scientific research and creative activities. Graduates will be capable of designing, implementing, professionally developing, and applying information and communication technologies (ICT), as well as using modern, computer-supported methods in decision-making, particularly in a rapidly changing information society and an emerging knowledge-based society.
The study programme is designed as an interdisciplinary programme with an emphasis on theoretical education in the fields of computer science and economics.
Graduation Requirements
- 240 credits or more
- internship in a foreign country
- oral defense of the doctoral thesis
- passing the state doctoral exam
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the doctoral study programme demonstrate, upon completion, deep and systematic knowledge of:
- systems science theory;
- contemporary economic theories;
- current statistical and mathematical methods in management;
- the system of sciences and research problems at the interface of systems engineering and computer science.
Graduates of the specialization Information and Knowledge Management further demonstrate knowledge of:
- the design, development, and implementation of selected types of information systems;
- business informatics;
- modelling and simulation;
- managerial aspects of working with information and knowledge.
Upon completion, graduates of the doctoral study programme are able to:
- design and apply advanced research methods in the fields of systems engineering and computer science in a manner that enables the expansion of disciplinary knowledge through original research;
- develop and evaluate theories, concepts, and methods of systems engineering and computer science, including defining the scope of the field and positioning it within a broader context.
Upon completion, graduates of the doctoral study programme are capable of:
- evaluating new knowledge with regard to the long-term economic and societal consequences of its application;
- engaging in creative activities within interdisciplinary teams;
- leading the work of research teams and planning extensive creative activities aimed at solving complex problems in the design and development of ICT, as well as acquiring and planning resources for their implementation;
- independently solving complex problems in creative activities or in the application of their outcomes;
- communicating their own research findings clearly and persuasively to other members of the international scientific community as well as to the general public;
- applying their expert knowledge, professional skills, and general competences in the English language;
- acquiring new expert knowledge, skills, and competences through their own creative activities and influencing the conditions and context of the education of others.
Admission Requirements
Applicants for the doctoral study programme Systems Engineering and Informatics, specialisation Information and Knowledge Management, must have completed a Master’s degree in economics, informatics, or another related study programme.
The entrance examination takes the form of an interview, during which the applicant’s knowledge of informatics, economics and the English language is assessed. In economics, applicants are expected to demonstrate an overview of the current development of the information society, knowledge of strategic management principles, economic theory focused on consumer and firm behaviour, or knowledge of macroeconomic indicators, including their theoretical foundations and current values. In informatics, applicants are expected to demonstrate the ability to design simple information systems, knowledge of issues related to enterprise informatics and programming, basic decision‑support tools, general knowledge of modern information and communication technologies, and knowledge of systems theory with a focus on systems engineering. The interview also includes a discussion of the submitted paper outlining the intended topic of the future doctoral dissertation, based primarily on a sufficient review of existing scientific literature. The paper must be submitted in advance and should be 2,500–3,000 words in length.
The final result of the interview is determined based on the assessment of the members of the examination board, who establish the ranking of applicants and make a recommendation regarding admission or non‑admission. An applicant is deemed successful if a simple majority of the present members of the examination board assess the applicant’s suitability positively. In the event of a tie, the chair of the board decides the final ranking. Admission to the programme is granted by the Dean of the Faculty upon recommendation of the examination board.
