Program Description

The programme places strong emphasis on the creative application of methods and tools of informatics to solving a wide range of real‑world problems. The objective of the study programme is, through independent scientific research and creative activity, to educate highly qualified professionals capable of researching, designing, implementing, professionally developing and, in particular, applying modern information, communication and knowledge technologies across various industrial and other sectors.

The study programme focuses on mastering scientific research methods for the development of systems based on information technologies for the collection, transmission, storage and processing of data, information and knowledge. The curriculum addresses issues related to the design, implementation, evaluation, use and maintenance of systems whose core component is a computer, across various application domains of informatics. It encompasses computer hardware, software, organisational and human aspects, as well as industrial and commercial applications. Emphasis is placed on the creative application of informatics methods and tools to solving real‑world problems.

Graduation Requirements

  • 240 credits or more
  • internship in a foreign country
  • oral defense of the doctoral thesis
  • passing the state doctoral exam

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the four‑year doctoral programme in Applied Informatics are capable of conducting scientific research and proposing original solutions to problems in the field of methods and tools for the development of systems for data, information and knowledge collection, transmission, storage and processing. They are able to independently acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of applied informatics.

Graduates are proficient in the principles of scientific work, scientific problem formulation, legal and environmental aspects of new products, as well as ethical and social aspects of scientific research. They are able to present research results in various forms, including publication in scientific journals and conference proceedings.

Upon completion of the doctoral programme, graduates are able to:

- design and apply advanced research methodologies in informatics in a manner that contributes to the expansion of disciplinary knowledge through original research;

- develop and evaluate theories, concepts and methods of informatics, including defining the discipline and positioning it within a broader context.

Graduates are further capable of:

- assessing new knowledge with regard to the long‑term consequences of its application;

- engaging in creative activities within interdisciplinary teams; - leading scientific teams and planning extensive creative activities when addressing complex problems in the design and development of ICT, including acquiring and planning resources for their implementation;

- independently solving complex problems in creative work or in the application of its results;

- communicating their own findings clearly and persuasively to the international scientific community as well as to the general public;

- applying their professional knowledge, skills and general competences in the English language;

- acquiring new professional knowledge, skills and competences through their own creative activities and influencing the conditions and context of education of others.

Study Opportunities

The doctoral study programme Applied Informatics follows on from the Master’s study programme Applied Informatics, which is currently offered.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the doctoral study programme must have completed a Master’s degree in an informatics‑related field or in another related study programme.

The entrance examination takes the form of an interview with the examination board, during which the applicant’s knowledge of informatics and the English language is assessed. In informatics, applicants are expected to demonstrate the ability to design simple database applications, knowledge of modelling tools, programming principles, general awareness of modern information and communication technologies, and knowledge of systems approaches and analysis. The interview also includes a discussion of the submitted paper outlining the intended topic of the future doctoral dissertation, based primarily on a sufficient review of existing scientific literature. The paper must be submitted in advance and should be 2,500–3,000 words in length.

The final result of the interview is determined based on the assessment of the members of the examination board, who establish the ranking of applicants and make a recommendation regarding admission or non‑admission. An applicant is deemed successful if a simple majority of the present members of the examination board assess the applicant’s suitability positively. In the event of a tie, the chair of the board decides the final ranking. Admission to the programme is granted by the Dean of the Faculty upon recommendation of the examination board.
