About Us

The Department of German Language and Literature is located in the building of joint teaching on the campus of UHK at the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice. Teaching takes place in classrooms equipped with modern teaching technology. Students can also take part in student mobility for studies in the German-speaking environment (semestral scholarship stays at partner universities abroad) and in one- or multi-day excursions (e.g. trips to Innsbruck, Graz, Salzburg, Vienna, Weimar, Naumburk, Leipzig, Regensburg , Passau, etc. were realised). They also have the opportunity to participate together with their teachers in scientific and educational projects. Individual access is provided to students during the consultation hours of individual teachers.

Characteristics of the department's activities: During the existence of the department, its members have participated and participate in the solution of internal and external grants FRVŠ, Socrates (Arion, Lingua), Tempus, Erasmus, Erasmus+. The department cooperated with the Faculty of Education of Charles University, IPN Kiel, King's College London, University of Lüneburg, University of Helsinki, and others, in the AQUA TEMPUS project. In the framework of the international project Teachers in Residence, close cooperation with the St. Martin College Lancaster (England), Pädagogische Akademie Innsbruck (Austria), Universidad de Alcala, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain) was established. Good cooperation also exists with the canton of Bern (Switzerland) and the Pädagogische Hochschule Steiermark Graz (Austria). Between 1999 and 2013, the department worked on a grant of the Germanistic Institutional Partnership GIP DAAD with the University of Eichstätt, which included student and teacher mobilities and scientific research. The most important grants that KNJL has been dealing with include the grant of the MŠMT Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the German language teaching for trainers of the optional module SIPVZ. At present, members of the department deal with grants IGS and ESP. KNJL is also a partner of the international project Schule im Wandel, coordinated by the Goethe-Institut Munich. KNJL, together with other language departments of the PdF UHK, was involved in the ESF LITTERA project aimed at supporting the reading skills of the primary and secondary school pupils and students in the region. The members of the department have been cooperating for a long time with the Goethe Institute in Prague, the Association of Germanists and Teachers of the German language and the National Institute of Further Education.

 

KNJL offers German language study in the following study programmes:

  • Teacher Training for Primary Schools

Master's degree programme Teacher Training for the 2nd Stage of the Primary Schools – German Language

It is a full-time 5-year Master's two-subject study programme for teacher training – in the Czech Republic accredited only at the Pedagogical Faculty in Hradec Králové – realized since the academic year 2014/2015. The aim of the study is to prepare the graduate for the future profession at a high level not only linguistically but also professionally. Students are acquainted with the latest knowledge, methods and trends in teaching German as a foreign language, they verify their theoretical knowledge in the course of teaching practice. The last students will be admitted to this type of study in the academic year 2019/20.  The study will no longer be carried out.

  • Teacher Training for the Primary Schools

Follow-up Master's degree programme Teacher Training for the 2nd Stage of the Primary Schools – German

It is a full-time 2-year follow-up Master's two-subject study programme as a continuation of the Bachelor's studies of the study programme German Language Focused on Education.

  • Bachelor's degree programme in German Focused on Education

From the academic year 2020/2021, the KNJL will carry out full-time three-year Bachelor’s studies, which can be followed by a two-year follow-up Master's study programme of the study field Teaching for the 2nd Stage of the Primary Schools - German Language and Literature.

  • Teacher Training for the Primary Schools

Master's degree programme Teacher Training for the1st Stage of the Primary Schools – German

As part of the teaching programme for the 1st stage of the primary schools, it is also possible to study a module focused on teaching German language for the 1st stage of the primary schools.

  • Bachelor's degree programme Foreign Languages for Tourism – German Language

It is a 3-year Bachelor's two-subject study programme - two-language studies (German language combined with another foreign language (English, Russian, French).

 

Lifelong Learning Programme for further education of the educational staff

  • German language for the secondary schools

(eligibility to teach at another type of school – 3-semester studies)

Admission procedure without entrance examination on the basis of a written application for study. CŽV takes place one day a week (usually on Friday) according to the schedule.
