About Us

The core activity of the Department of Art, Visual Culture and Textile Studies is the preparation of future pedagogical staff in the fields of art education, visual culture, textile creation and graphic design, as well as the preparation of professionals from related professions (e.g. art therapy for future social workers). Art courses are taught through drawing, painting, spatial, graphic and textile creation, multimedia, photography, video art and more.

The department guarantees Bachelor's, Master's and follow-up Master's degree programmes:

  • Fine Arts Focused on Education (Bachelor’s degree, Bc.), Teacher Training for the 2nd Stage of the Primary Schools - Art Education (follow-up Master's degree, Mgr.), Teacher Training for Secondary Schools - Art Education (follow-up Master's degree, Mgr.), Teacher Training for 2nd Stage of the Primary Schools - Art Education (continuous five-year studies, Mgr.). The preparation of the students takes place in the subjects of painting, drawing, spatial creation (modelling, sculpture and alternative creation, ceramics), art history (history of culture, monument care, aesthetics), photography, didactics, etc.

The Department of Art, Visual Culture and Textile Studies provides art education for the following fields:

  • Teacher Training for the 1st Stage of the Primary Schools and Teacher Training for Kindergartens

The department also guarantees Bachelor’s study programmes with one field of study:

  • Graphic Design - Multimedia. The aim of the study programme Graphic Design - Multimedia is to acquaint students with the possibilities of interconnecting new media with the graphic design and their mutual influence in the field of free and applied art. The aim of the study is also the creative use of new media in the graphic design and visual communication in general and preparation for the use of this knowledge in the educational process in the field of extracurricular pedagogy, both in practice and in theory. Graduates of the study programme are able to work independently in the field of free and applied graphics, have experience in using new media (computer graphics, video, animation) and classical graphic techniques in the visual communication. The spectrum of studios, lectures and seminars offers students the possibility of individual focus. Students regularly present their works at exhibitions and competitions, and they are regularly awarded by prestigious prizes at these shows and at the field competitions.
  • Textile Creation The main content is textile design focused on clothing and home design, drawing, painting and computer graphics, representing the starting points for future artistic creation and teaching practice. Practical training is based on basic subjects: studio textile creation, drawing, painting, computer graphics, bobbin lace, weaving, paper and book, textile workshops and didactics of art education. The graduate of the study programme Textile Creation is on the basis of the professional specialization ready to assert himself/herself in the whole spectrum of activities in the clothing and housing creation.. These include printing design, weaving design, lace and embroidery design, design of decorative items made of textile and alternative materials. The graduate can perform artistic activities either independently or in design studios and workshops of companies engaged in the creation and production of textile products. He/she can also apply the gained experience in the pedagogical practice. After graduation, the graduate can continue his/her studies in the single-subject follow-up Master's study programme Teaching Art Education for Primary Art Schools and Secondary Schools.. Students of the textile study programme regularly present their works at international trade fairs and exhibitions of textiles and design, and they are regularly awarded by prestigious prizes at these shows and at the field competitions.

Furthermore, the department guarantees a follow-up Master's degree programme:

  • Training Teacher in Fine Arts for Primary Art Schools and Secondary Schools follows up with the Bachelor’s study programme Textile Creation. It focuses on the training of future art teachers possessing broad professional competencies. The structure of the curriculum represents the concept of a comprehensive concept of the art education integrating pedagogical-psychological, practical and theoretical-didactic art disciplines. In addition to practical art disciplines of painting, drawing, graphics, textile creation, spatial creation, photography, video art and ceramics, the study is deepened by art-theoretical and didactic disciplines with emphasis on subjects profiling the graduate's educational qualifications. The content of teaching the art disciplines of the Master's study programme is the knowledge and skills necessary for the future pedagogical activity of the graduate. The goal of the field is to develop aesthetic feeling, manual skills and creative potential of students. The mission of the field of study is also to preserve traditional textile technology as part of the cultural heritage of the Czech Republic for future generations.

 

The Department of Art, Visual Culture and Textile Studies closely works with a number of cultural, educational and scientific institutions in the Czech Republic and with foreign universities - traditionally in Slovakia, Poland and Norway. Students of the art disciplines together with their teachers present their works at a number of art shows and exhibitions. As part of their studies, students exhibit their art works and artistic realizations in the University Gallery T. Students and also teachers of the department regularly successfully participate in prestigious competitions.

Students are within their study involved in the scientific research in the field of education, often focused on evaluation and possibilities of improving the quality of the current concept of the art education at kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in the Czech Republic. The research material is acquired by students at faculty schools and the results of the scientific research are presented in the professional press and at the branch conferences.

The Department of Art, Visual Culture and Textile Studies ensures the operation of the Gallery T at the University of Hradec Králové. The Gallery T offers students of the department the opportunity to present their works of art at regular exhibitions - presentations of final exam’s, Bachelor’s and diploma theses. At the same time, the gallery is also a place where traditional collected shows of friendly art-oriented primary, secondary schools and universities and of invited Czech visual artists take place.
