Institute of History

History has been taught at UHK (and its predecessors) since 1959. The Institute of History was established upon the background of the former Department of History on 1 April 1996. It focuses on research and education in History from the medieval period to contemporary history. It emphasises interdisciplinarity, “glocal” (global & local) partnerships and the connection of science with practice, both in research and teaching.

The Institute offers an undergraduate (Bachelor’s) programme in Presentation and Protection of Cultural Heritage and History for Education, a graduate (Master’s) programme in History and History for Teachers, a PhD. programme in History and a study programme in English – Central European Studies (Master’s Degree).

The Institute is entitled to associate professorship and full professorship procedures in Czech and Czechoslovak History.

Our professional interests include a comparative history of Central Europe, military history, the history of political thought, the aristocracy, the history of Czechoslovakia with a focus on the communist regime (esp. the “Prague Spring” of 1968) and Czechoslovak exile. We co-operate with several academic institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad.

The Institute publishes the peer-reviewed journal (Erih+) Historia Aperta (East-Bohemian Journal of History), which is open for the publication of original articles in Czech, Slovak or English languages.
