Department of Archaeology

At the Department of Archaeology at the UHK Philosophical Faculty we focus on the study of material culture, with the aim of reconstructing the living constructions of humans and the form of society from the paleolithic to the modern era.

The specific focus of our research is the archaeology of conflicts, the study of prehistoric technologies or the use of experimental archaeology. We provide teaching of archaeology on the levels of Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral study programmes. In addition to study itself, we offer a broad spectrum of work experience on various types of archaeological surveys, which we realise not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad. Our activity also involves laboratory processing of findings. In our research we apply modern methods of analysis and documentation such as the use of geographical information systems for the spatial study of archaeological sources, advanced forms of imaging methods (3D scanning and microscopy, computer tomography) or analyses of chemical composition. In addition to research, we also cultivate public relations with archaeology by means of presentations of our projects and programmes. The main centre of this activity is the Archaeological Prehistory Park in Všestary.

The department also has an active Archaeology Student Club:  https://www.facebook.com/SKAUHK/

As well as a project with the Czech Science Foundation: Technological changes in ceramic production in connection with social transformations during the course of the La Tène period in Bohemia (19-21146S), managed by Richard Thér Ph.D.
