7th Czech Lipidomic Conference attracted a hundred of participants

Author: Kristýna Vávrová

On 19 and 20 May 2022, the Faculty of Science of the University of Hradec Králové hosted the 7th Czech Lipidomy Conference. The conference was organised by the Lipidomics Section of the Czech Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. It welcomed speakers from the Czech Republic as well as from other European countries. The conference also included a poster section.

This traditional conference aims to enable meetings and start cooperation of experts from the Czech Republic dealing with lipids in various fields of chemistry, biology and medicine.

"The conference is usually held once every 2 years, but due to Covid-19 pandemic we had to postpone it by two years until this year. Compared to previous years, we introduced innovation represented by including topics from the field of metabolomics, in which participants of previous years showed interest. The reason for this step can be found in more frequent combinations of lipidomic and metabolomics data that provide a more complex view of an organism´s  metabolism and its role, for example, in the origin and development of various serious diseases, "says doc. Ing. Miroslav Lísa, Ph.D., the main conference organizer working at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, UHK.

The invited speakers were Roger Sandhoff (Lipid Pathobiochemistry Group, German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany) with a lecture on Chromatography & Mass Spectrometry: Why There Is No All-in-One Solution For Sphingolipidomics and Tomáš Pluskal (Biochemistry of Plant Specialized Metabolites, Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry ASCR, Prague) with his paper Characterization of chemodiversity of pepper plants using metabolomics and molecular networks.

Based on the interest of the conference participants, the programme also included teaching lectures on statistical methods in metabolomics studies (Ing. Eva Cífková, Ph.D., University of Hradec Králové), bioinformatics tools in metabolomics and lipidomics (Mgr. Aleš Kvasnička, Palacký University Olomouc) and biologically interesting lipids (RNDr. Ondřej Kuda, Ph.D., Institute of Physiology ASCR).
