The Summer School offered a rich programme as well as time to get to know the Czech Republic

Author: Kristýna Vávrová

Even the summer time at the Faculty of Science did not stand idle. From 13 July until 13 August 2022 the faculty classrooms were filled with forty students from countries worldwide. There were students from neighboring Slovakia, Great Britain, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Greece, Lithuania, Ukraine or China.

Students could choose from four summer school programmes: toxicology, applied biology, cybernetic systems or geometry and topology. The taught programmes were provided by lecturers from the Departments of the Faculty of Sciences, UHK.

In addition to the lectures and laboratory practice, the paricipants could also experience field excursions or practical demonstrations of ongoing research at the faculty.

I really enjoyed work in the labs. I could try and carry out experiments we didn't do at our school or we didn't have time for.

The participants had enough time and opportunity to get to know the city of Hradec Králové. They visited the Museum of East Bohemia, the Petrof Gallery and the Observatory and Planetarium. They could also explore places outside the city of Hradec Králové; they went on excursions to the Kuks Hospital, the Zoo Dvůr Králové nad Labem, the town of Kutná Hora and the capital city of Prague.  Those who wanted to see other places of interests of the Czech country had enough time in their schedule to go on trips of their own.

The trips were interesting and I really appreciate I could practise my English, meet interesting people and so compare the education system here in the Czech Republic and other countries.

"When planning the Summer School, we always do our best to plan an interesting and balanced programme. We want to offer exciting topics and possibilities to develop skills that students will then use in their studies. At the same time, we also want to present the Czech Republic and our faculty with all possibilities they can offer. This way, our prepared programme also includes a social dimension. "If the students decide on an academic career, perhaps in the future they will work together with their classmates from the summer school," concludes Kamil Musílek, vice-dean for International Affairs of the Faculty of Science, UHK.
