A contract was signed early November 2018 by and between the University of Hradec Králové and Yangtze University in China, shifting the level of cooperation between these two institutions to the next level. A kick-off Memorandum of Understanding started everything in 2016. The Yangtze University - University of Hradec Králové Joint Laboratory of Toxicology opens in the spring of 2019.

Yangtze University lies in the southern part of Hubei province and offers a wide range of study programmes to more than 34,000 students. Apart from law, education, economics, natural sciences and medicine, Yangtze University also provides an education in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, and mechatronic engineering in all degree levels.

“The establishment of this centre definitely facilitates toxicology experts working at the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science of the University of Hradec Králové in their research work and it also positively reflects on other areas of development focused on at the University of Hradec Králové,” assesses the future contribution of the international centre UHK Rector, Kamil Kuča.

The laboratory’s joint research objectives are directed not only at toxicology but also at the development of dietary supplements, pharmacology and the metabolism of substances. The centre also greatly contributes to the internationalisation of the University of Hradec Králové as it enriches both institutions primarily, but not only, in that it makes research and study stays possible: “In the future we hope in the exchange stays not only of academic workers but also students and so-called ‘postdocs’,” noted Pavel Trojovský, Dean of the Faculty of Science of the University of Hradec Králové. Apart from that, the academic workers of both institutes can function as consultants to students working on their bachelor thesis, diploma thesis or dissertation and they can use the laboratory equipment.

On-going toxicology-related cooperation envisions the creation of a joint double degree study programme.
