Silver and bronze medal from the International Physics Olympiad for the Czech Republic

On 21st to 29th July 2018 the 49th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) was held in Lisbon, Portugal. As usually Czech team attended this world's top competition for students of secondary schools in the field of physics, and eventually has won one silver and two bronze medals, and placed at 31st place among 87 countries in the global competition and has even taken the 5th place among the countries of the European Union.

The students had to cope with demanding theoretical and experimental tasks: "It is worth mentioning the excellent result of the Czech team in the theoretical part of the competition, especially the result of Jindřich Jelínek from the first theoretical task. He eventually ranked as number 81 in 396 students from all over the world," says Jan Kříž from the Faculty of Science, University of Hradec Králové, who runs the entire Czech IPhO delegation every year and actively participates in the preparation of students. The prepraration is organized at FoS UHK with participation of many academic staff from Department of Physics with long time experience in preparing students for this type of competition

"Experiments are challenging task for our students, given the fact that nowadays, in many Czech schools students do not get to an experiment throughout their studies, and all five Czech contestants have, without discussion, proven much higher levels of knowledge and experimental skills than current requirements at our high schools," says Jan Kříž.

Another MFO will take place in Israel in July 2019. The Czech delegation has already received an invitation to participate and aims to keep this great success.
