Abstract: This lecture explores science fiction as both a form of entertainment and a medium for learning, showing how developments in the natural sciences shape contemporary literature, film, and painting, and how these fields respond to scientific breakthroughs and reinterpretations of physical laws. It introduces the origins and characteristics of the genre, including Hugo Gernsback’s concept of “scientific fiction,” and examines its broader intellectual scope through examples such as Stanisław Lem’s work, which extends into philosophical, metaphysical, and social themes. The lecture presents science fiction as a reflection of modern fears and hopes, a tool for exploring the human condition, and a platform for discussing complex issues related to science, technology, ethics, and society. Through selected works, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, it considers the relationship between scientific accuracy and artistic appeal, as well as the role of science fiction in encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and appreciation of visual art as an independent form of expression.
Consultation: Thursday, 23 April, 9:55–11:25, Room S6
An open session for students to discuss the lecture topics with the professor.
