Jiří Lipovský Appointed Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics

Jiří Lipovský was appointed associate professor in the field of Applied Mathematics at a ceremony in the Bethlehem Chapel on 20th June 2023.

His habilitation thesis entitled "Spectral Theory Problems on Graphs and Their Applications" is a set of nine articles published in professional impact journals dealing with solving mathematical problems associated with physical models on graphs. The thesis studies quantum graphs (describing the movement of a quantum particle on a graph), microwave graphs (a model that allows to measure the properties of quantum graphs using microwaves), the wave equation with damping or the so-called polyharmonic operator (the power of the Laplace operator that has applications in the linear theory of elasticity). The habilitation examination took place before the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Nuclear and Physical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague.

doc. RNDr. Jiří Lipovský, Ph.D. *1984

Jiří Lipovský graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in Prague with a bachelor's degree in General Physics, a subsequent master's degree in Theoretical Physics and a doctoral degree in Theoretical Physics, Astronomy and Astrophysics. During his doctoral studies, he was employed at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Řež near Prague. After a one-year postdoctoral stay at the University of Lisbon, in 2013 he started working at the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Science UHK where he mainly teaches mathematics subjects for physics students. In 2018-19, he completed another six-month stay at the University of Lisbon.

He deals with mathematical physics, mainly the spectral theory of operators connected with quantum theory. Since 2017, he has been a delegate to the Assembly of the Council of Universities for the Faculty of Scinece, UHK, and since 2019 he has been a member of the UHK Academic Senate. He won the UHK rector's awards for publication activity in 2016 and 2017.

In his free time, Jiří Lipovský likes to participate in puzzle hunt games or listen to the songs of the American singer Regina Spektor.
