Foz do Iguacu, Brazil

At the beginning of the academic year 2015/2016 group of six students from the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science of the University of Hradec Králové (UHK) went on a one-month study visit to the University of Latin American Integration (UNILA) in the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguacu.

UNILA is located in the very heart of South America on the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Although it is a young university, its team of scientists at the Department of Biology reached many interesting results. This is mostly due to the university geographical location that includes the National Park Cataratas do Iguacu with its largest complex of waterfalls in the world, and also the Itaipu hydroelectric plant on the Paraná River, which was until recently the greatest hydroelectric plant in the world.

The main task of Czech students was to develop and expand a close relationships with the UNILA’s Faculty of Science. Our young scientists not only represented our university at a series of meetings, field exercises and practical workshops in laboratories, they also managed to pre-negotiate a bilateral agreement with the rector of the University UNILA professor Josué Modesto dos Passos Subrinho aiming at the study exchange between both universities.
