The University of Hradec Králové (UHK) is a state-funded institution with a long tradition of education and academic scholarship. At present UHK consists of three faculties – The Faculty of Education (PdF), The Faculty of Informatics and Management (FIM) and The Faculty of Arts (FoA).

The Faculty of Informatics and Management educates university- qualified professionals for a broad range of opportunities in the private and state sectors. Students can choose one of five specializations in a Bachelor’s degree programme and after graduation they can continue studying in a two-year Master’s degree programme which can be undertaken directly at the Faculty, at other colleges in the Czech Republic, or abroad. The Faculty also provides a five-year Master’s degree programme in Information Management.
Apart from the programmes delivered in Czech, there are also two Bachelor´s degree programmes in Information Management and Applied Informatics and a follow-up two-year Master’s degree programme in Information Management. These are delivered in English. Economic-management skills are an integral part of all fields of studies, along with a heavy emphasis put on the effective use of modern information technologies. A detailed description of the Bachelor’s degree programmes and the Master’s degree programme delivered in English is given in the next section.
The programmes are also suitable for exchange students who can follow just a chosen part that might be complemented with any course delivered at FIM where the language barriers will not cause any problems [language courses, sporting activities, etc.]. Throughout its existence the Faculty has always been involved in mutual student exchanges within the frame of the LLP/Erasmus programme and we are proud to attract the attention of our partner universities’ students who are welcome to spend a period of study at FIM.
The total number of undergraduates studying at the Faculty is about 2100. Considering the size of the Faculty, individual approach combined with relaxed and friendly atmosphere makes the Faculty attractive to students from both the Czech Republic and abroad.
The Faculty of Informatics and Management is aware of the necessity of maintaining strong relationships with industrial and research institutions. Therefore, the Faculty has developed several advantageous programs with businesses and institutions in our region. Cooperation with Czech and foreign universities of a similar orientation ensure our stable position among Czech universities. The Faculty itself also cooperates with other European and American universities while participating in various international projects. Our main research programmes focus on knowledge management for an information society and information technology in education.
Moreover, the location of Hradec Králové makes the town attractive as well. It is the metropolis of East Bohemia about 100km from Prague. Hradec Králové, which is one of the oldest and most picturesque cities in the Czech Republic, provides students with excellent studying conditions. A quiet and pleasant city-environment offers cultural and sporting activities and many other opportunities for relaxation.
Let me give you a short introduction of the Faculty of Informatics and Management, in which you have just shown interest. The faculty has its main seat in a new modern building in the area ”Na Soutoku“; the new common premises provide big lecture halls for teaching purposes, and boast one of the most modern university libraries in the Czech Republic. Most teaching premises are equipped with the latest technologies and we strive to improve working conditions for both our students and teachers. More than 300 classroom computers are available; these are connected to the local network and the Internet through an optical cable with the speed of 1Gb. Our students enjoy free access to computer rooms till late hours as well as on Saturdays. There is also a service centre at their disposal providing copying, printing and recording on various types of media.
We have almost 2,300 students in three study programmes: Applied Informatics, Economics and Management, and System Engineering and Informatics in bachelor, master and doctorate study programmes. One of the advantages our students have is an easy access to a great variety of teaching materials in an electronic form; in the field of eLearning the faculty ranks without doubt among the best in the Czech Republic.
Another strong point of this institution is wide international cooperation within the framework of LLP/ERASMUS programme. We have successfully developed cooperation with a number of universities in the UK, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Greece, Germany, Austria, Finland, Portugal, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Slovenia, Slovakia and Turkey. These activities mainly involve student exchange programmes and visiting lecturers. In the academic year 2008/2009 scholarships and possibility to study in European countries has been given to 63 students. Two other students were granted scholarships and posibility to study at Norwich University in Vermont, USA. As a result of positive experiences we are providing more scholarships at our partner universities in Taiwan. At the moment 14 scholarships are being prepared for spring 2009, 19 scholarships are planned for spring 2010.
We also fully support a close link with practical life sphere. Many seminar and bachelor papers and thesis deal with very practical topics; significant professionals and top managers are invited to lecture at our faculty. In 2007/2008 we heard lectures of leading management from Microsoft, IBM, T-Mobile, Komerční banka, ASUS Computer, Unicorn and a number of prominent personalities from the entrepreneurial and public spheres.
Your applications will be very welcome, should you decide to study at our faculty. The town of Hradec Králové, which ranks among the oldest and nicest of Czech towns, will provide the best conditions. You will find a pleasant environment for your studies, sufficient opportunities for culture and sport as well as facilities for entertainment and leisure activities.
You will be making the right decision if you enrol and it remains for me only to wish you the very best of luck in your entrance examination.
