The Department of Informatics
offers the following degree programmes: BA Informatics in Education
degree programme, follow-up MA degree programmes Teaching Informatics
for Upper Levels of Primary Schools and for Secondary Schools, and the
Ph.D. Information and Communication Technologies in Education degree
programme. The department is entitled to award the degree Doctor of
Philosophy (PhDr.) on the basis of the student´s successful passing of
the doctorate viva voce examination. Moreover, the department offers
teaching qualification extension courses.
The BA degree programme is the
first step to obtain the teacher´s qualification for primary and
secondary schools. The programme covers all fundamental aspects of
informatics and its main disciplines, particularly hardware, software,
operational systems, computer graphics, programming, and consequent use
of these aspects in the instruction of scientific and technical
subjects.
The PhD degree programme is
designed to raise experts in the area of informatics, to prepare them
for independent work in science, research and development. Graduates
will be able to present expert contributions to the theory of science
education, and they will be able to deal with complex and challenging
problems connected with informatics instruction, both theoretically and
in practice. Graduates of the PhD programme pursue a great variety of
careers: they have excellent job prospects as informatics teachers and
methodology advisors in all types of schools, as authors of teaching
materials, or they pursue research and related careers.
The academic staff and the
students of the department are engaged mainly in the research of methods
and the use of information and communication technologies in education.
Another main interest of the department is the technical support of
other natural scientific disciplines: the current research is focused on
modelling of physical situations with the use of ICT.
The Department of Informatics has
two sections: the section of applied informatics and the section of
information and communication technologies. It cooperates with similarly
related departments of other Czech universities, including academic
staff exchange.
