The Department of
Archaeology offers the BA Archaeology degree programme, the BA
Multimedia in Archaeology degree programme, and the MA and PhD
Archaeology degree programmes.
The BA Archaeology degree
programme provides the students with a thorough overview of historical
development from prehistory until the Middle Ages, thus covering all
periods traditionally dealt with within archaeological research of the
regions of Bohemia and Moravia. The courses are taught by experts
practiced both in theory and practice, and students are introduced to
both these aspects of archaeological science. Students are motivated by
numerous field trips and field work, excavation works and documentation;
they participate in the presentation of archaeology in the university
Prehistoric Archaeological Park located in the vicinity of Hradec
Králové, and they get trained in experimental archaeology within the
Centre of Experimental Archaeology.
The aim of the unique BA Media in
Archaeology degree programme is to contribute to the documentation of
the archaeological research and its presentation to public. The
programme consists of archaeological section that structurally coincides
with the structure of the Archaeology programme, and of the informatics
section that comprise applied informatics in archaeology (GIS,
databases, graphic representation, etc).
The contents of the MA programme
are focused more on theoretical knowledge. Graduates have obtained
comprehensive knowledge of archaeological methods and the analogies of
archaeological facts in Europe, ranging from the periods of palaeolithic
to middle ages and even later.
The academic staff are engaged in
the research of individual periods of prehistory and protohistory.
Numerous outcomes of the department´s research are considered as unique,
in basic as well as applied areas of archaeology (formative processes,
experimental archaeology, aerial archaeology, popularization of
archaeology, etc.). One of the most valued projects is the founding of
the above mentioned Prehistoric Archaeological Park.
