The Institute of History is
responsible for the instruction of history in all study programmes
training teachers of upper levels of primary schools and of secondary
schools that are realised at the Faculty of Education, and in the BA
Joint Honours Archival science – History degree programme. Furthermore,
the department offers a separate BA Presentation and Protection of
Cultural Heritage study programme and a follow-up MA History degree
programme. Moreover, the department is entitled to award the degree
Doctor of Philosophy (PhDr.) to students of History degree programme,
concerning both teaching and non-teaching specialization on the basis of
the student´s successful passing of the doctorate viva voce
examination. Students interested in postgraduate studies can pursue the
PhD Czech and Czechoslovak History degree programme.
The research activities of the
department systematically focus on two research topics that are closely
related to each other. First, one of the department´s main interests
concerns the history of the region of Eastern Bohemia. One of the
outcomes of the team research is the unique, respected and voluminous
monograph History of Eastern Bohemia in Prehistory and the Middle Ages
(up to the Year 1526). Works on a sequel that would cover modern history
of Eastern Bohemia are in progress. Another research topic central to
the life of the department is the history of Klodzko County and of
medieval and early modern history of the Silesia region. This research
is carried out in cooperation with Polish historians. Crucial research
outputs comprise numerous distinguished monographs.
